We are looking to recruit two Clinical Fellowsto join the medical team at the Frenchay Brain Injury Rehabilitation Unit (BIRU), one of the UK's leading specialist inpatient rehabilitation services for adults with acquired brain injury.

These posts provide an excellent opportunity for doctors with an interest in rehabilitation medicine, neurology, general medicine, psychiatry or acute care to develop their skills in the management of patients with complex neurological disabilities within a supportive, consultant-led multidisciplinary team.

  • One full-time and one part-time post
  • Two part-time posts
  • Other combinations that provide the required clinical cover

What you'll be doing:

As a Clinical Fellow, you will provide day-to-day medical care for patients undergoing specialist inpatient rehabilitation following acquired brain injury. Patients have a wide range of medical, neurological and rehabilitation needs, from routine medical management to the occasional acute deterioration requiring transfer to the acute hospital. Many patients also experience cognitive, behavioural and communication difficulties as a consequence of their brain injury.

You will take a leading role in the general medical management of patients while working closely with experienced Consultants in Rehabilitation Medicine, Neuropsychiatry and Neuropsychology, who are readily available to provide support and specialist advice.

The role offers significant clinical responsibility within a highly supportive environment, allowing you to develop confidence in managing complex patients while gaining valuable experience in specialist rehabilitation medicine.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing day-to-day medical care for Level 1 and Level 2 inpatient rehabilitation patients.
  • Clerking new admissions, including gathering collateral information from referring hospitals, community teams and families.
  • Participating in daily Flow and Huddle meetings.
  • Attending weekly multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • Joining twice-weekly consultant-led ward rounds.
  • Supporting and participating in family review meetings.
  • Maintaining accurate electronic patient records, including admission documentation, care notes and comprehensive discharge summaries.
  • Working collaboratively with nursing, therapy and psychology colleagues to deliver holistic, patient-centred rehabilitation.
  • Managing medical issues promptly and escalating appropriately when acute intervention is required.

What we would like from you:

    • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC)
    • Recent experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent)
    • Completion of Foundation Years 1 and 2 or equivalent
    • Some experience in neurology is desirable
    • Enjoy working as part of a multidisciplinary team.
    • Have excellent clinical, communication and organisational skills.
    • Are compassionate, adaptable and able to build strong relationships with patients, families and colleagues.
    • Are interested in developing expertise in the care of patients with complex neurological disability.
